Welcome to Miss Rachel’s Pantry

Miss Rachel’s Pantry is an unassuming café in the Point Breeze neighborhood in South Philadelphia. It feels a little like stepping into your grandmother’s kitchen. That is, if your grandmother was a stylish Jewish lady with an impeccable talent for interior design. Decorated with vintage pictures and furniture, with pops of turquoise, this café is unlike any others in the neighborhood. Before getting on the brunch game, Miss Rachel’s was initially known for home-delivered meals and Saturday communal dinners, which are by reservation only. But now everyone can enjoy Miss Rachel’s without reservations on weekend mornings. Classic Jewish comfort food can be found here, and it’s all vegan! Looking at everything in the case immediately brought me back to my childhood. Jars of homemade matzoh ball soup, knishes, even “whitefish” salad and “lox”! I was in heaven. We decided for our entrees we’d get the challah French toast and challah grilled cheese, which changes every week. We started with coffee, Philly-made almond milk, knishes and cardamom rice pudding. I thought I’d be underwhelmed by the rice pudding, but it was so good. And the almond milk is by far the best almond milk I’ve ever tasted. Very smooth, but a lot of flavor. I couldn’t stop drinking it! The knishes were everything I remembered them to be. And with pizza and caramelized onion being the two flavors, I obviously had to get both. The French toast, which was a fancy peanut butter and jelly deal, was delicious. However, it was the grilled cheese that really impressed me. Perfectly golden challah with melty, gooey pepper jack cheese (house-made), buffalo seitan, and avocado. Pretty much all of my favorite things on a sandwich. I decided to take home just about everything in the case. I ended up with a pepper jack wedge, pub cheese, hummingbird cake, and the whitefish and lox. Let’s just say I had a lot of super happy-making bagel sandwiches this week. I can’t wait to try their communal dinner.
